Some of you Brooklyn beach bums may be aware that the waters were closed to swimmers over this past weekend due to extreme riptides. But not to worry because you could swim anyway! Most of the lifeguards along the strip of beach between Coney Island and Brighton were more concerned with how to style themselves (should I wear the designer sunglasses and the lip gloss?) or how fast they should twirl their whistles. The most shocking thing was that the group I was near spent most of their time BEHIND or on the SIDE of the lifeguard stand with their backs to the water! (I guess they never heard of the number one surfer rule of thumb. NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR MOTHER!) It was only when someone told them that someone was IN the water that they would self consciously saunter down to the shore, twirling their whistles and would ineffectively blow them. No hand signals, no authority, just non stop whistle blowing.

Sheepshead Bay Bites

I've been a bad blogger. I've been a busy non blogging blogger up until recently and during that time Ray Johnson of the fab Sheepshead Bay Bites blog posted this photo I took last year while contemplating life in Brighton Beach. The words answered the question that was going on in mind that day, it was amazing.

Found ON Brighton Beach!
Went out to Coney Island today to clear my head, my head was in such need of clearing I forgot my camera so due to the limitations of my cel phone camera (ah technology!) I could not get this shot in full. The best part is left out! This gem of a message in the sand says:This city is my fav place (Manhattan & Brooklyn)
Fuck This, I AIN'T LEAVING!
My sentiments exactly!
I've been here far too long! And where else can I jump on a train and take in the sea air?
On my contemplative jaunt along the shore from Coney Island to Brighton Beach I saw quite a few renegade swimmers of the Russian persuasion catching some waves and also some other great messages in the sand that were way to big to photograph, my fave was BINGO! WE MISS YOU!!!!
P.S- If you want to see some friggin' AWESOME pictures of the Polar Bear Swim on New Year's Day, check out Brit in Brooklyn. I love how this guy always seems to throw himself into the middle of everything, water on the lens and everythang!
