Brooklyn Documentary Night @ Freddy's Wednesday* 8:30 Sharp!

On the eve of Ratner's ceremonial groundbreaking, the Kings County Cinema Society, "an informal organization devoted to the unfettered, unbiased love of film and the moving image in the borough of Brooklyn , and occasionally beyond" presents:

Locally-made docs at Freddy's, screening 3 Brooklyn made docs which include footage and clips from "Battle of Brooklyn" a doc about the Atlantic Yards.

Michael Galinsky will be on hand with interview footage and clips from a rough cut of their investigation into the politics of the massive Atlantic Yards/ Barclays Center development, Battle of Brooklyn.

It's a Rainy Weekend! Go to the Coney Island Film Festival!

A reminder that the Coney Island Film Festival is going on this weekend and with rain in the forecast for the whole weekend it’s the perfect thing to do. I attended the opening last night which kicked off with documentary short “Down the Hatch: The life teachings of John “Red” Stuart” and documentary feature “Sideshow Still Alive”. Both films were about the unique lives of the sideshow performer, I saw more sword swallowing, fire breathing, glass walking and nails hammered in to nostrils within 90 minutes than I have seen in my entire life. And it continued LIVE at the opening party entertainment provided by the performers of Coney Island’s Sideshows by the Seashore crew. Outside I schmoozed with filmmaker Juan C. Lopez and burlesque performer Little Brooklyn who performed an unusual and stunningly choreographed routine involving a gorilla and a banana at the party. As usual a friendly crowd and a splendid time appeared to be had by all.

So, it’s 1:30 pm on Saturday now (and FIB has no internet at home and is blogging from the library, now THAT'S dedication!) and there are still more than a 100 shorts, docs and features running through 8pm tomorrow night. Check it out! Here is the schedule! On my way back out there now!

Donald O'Finn Screening Saturday Afternoon in Red Hook @ 2pm!

Donald O'Finn, the guy who makes those great videos that play at Freddy's Bar & Backroom and an artist in his own right makes a rare daytime appearance and is hosting a screening of recent work ³Psycho Recut² at the BWAC Screening Room in Redhook Saturday afternoon at 2pm. I'll be there, will you?

Donald O'Finn, the master of repurposed footage, counterpoints the Hitchcock classic black and white film with Gus Van Sant's color re-make andre-purposes scenes of the two films into a stunning work of art.

Mr. O¹Finn will introduce the Art piece which will then run for one hour. He will take questions after.

The BWAC Screening Room is located at 499 Van Brunt St., Red Hook, Brooklyn, inside the BWAC Art gallery, across from the new Fairway and two blocks from the new Ikea.

Vampira 1921-2008

I'm going extremely off topic here but I'm a little sad to hear that Vampira born Maila Nurmi in Finland went to the otherside recently.

I've always had a fascination for her. I dug her Charles Adamsy beatniky vibe. This years Coney Island Film Festival screened a fantastic documentary on the golden age of television horror hosts called American Scary which I saw on opening night. I mentioned in my blog post that I hounded the producer, Sandy Clark, for more info on Vampira. I actually entertained this little fantasy (and my friends can attest to it), that I was going to go to L.A and meet her. She had ended up somewhat destitute and was apparantly easy to approach despite being an american icon. There is not one book written on her life and I wanted to write it. Well I missed the boat on that one, but you know, it probrably would have remained a movie in my head anyway. I read in her obit that her friends and fans are trying to raise money to bury her in "Hollywood Forever" cemetery. I hope Tim Burton steps in and takes care of it, he OWES her BIG TIME!

Her death wasn't really big news to the world so I just thought I'd say something.

Coney Island Film Festival #7 this Weekend!

Yet another uber creative Coney Island event. Can someone please remind me just WHY this place is supposed to turn into a cross between Disney and Knott's Berry Farm? Oh yeah I forgot, greed. Please forgive me.

The Coney Island Film Festival starts Friday night with a film called "American Scary" which takes a look at the nation's tradition of horror hosting, from Zacherley to A. Ghastlee Ghoul. The film is immediately followed by an opening party hosted by The Great Fredini. Live performances by New York Burlesque Stars and performers from The Coney Island Circus Sideshow. Open Bar!

The Festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will be running short films as well as feature length films. Here is the full schedule of events.

Get your tickets soon as I noticed that the documentary on the N.Y Mets:"Mathematically Alive: A Story of Fandom" is already sold out!

The festival ends Sunday night with an Awards Presentation at The El Dorado Bumper Cars, 1216 Surf Ave @ 7:30pm.

Music & Short Films at "The Yard" Saturday

The Yard has been having a busy schedule lately...I personally CAN NOT wait until the premier Black Sabbath copy band "Sabbra Caddabra" performs there but here is what is going on Saturday which is also very cool. They will be showing "home movies". "The Yard" is an outdoor venue along the Gowanus Canal. The entrance is right before the Carroll Street Bridge on the Bond Street side.
