The rezoning of Bond Street is happening quicker than anticipated. Many of us in the neighborhood are concerned about the enviromental issues involved in the Toll Brothers Condo Complex. Just to name a few.We are concerned about our health (the site is located on a brownfield),the canal's fragile ecosystem, the fact that the condos are being built in a flood zone with a major sewage problem, the fact that they intend on building before a new flushing tunnel is installed, there is A LOT to be concerned about. This meeting on Monday has some good people attending (see below)I urge anyone who is concerned about this project to attend.
It’s coming and it’s big.577 new apartments on the Gowanus. The Toll Brothers have unveiled their plan for a 605,380 square foot project between Bond and the Gowanus, Carroll and Second Streets. What does it mean for our neighborhood?
Come hear Craig Hammerman (District Manager Community Board 6),
Phil dePaolo(Community Organizer), Tony Avella (City Council member) address our concerned response the Toll Brothers development.
Help plan for the upcoming Public Scoping Meeting at City Planning on 13 March.

Brian Berger
Jesus is Lord (East New York)
Next up in the Found in Brooklyn Group Art Show hit parade is some photography from Mr. Brian Berger. Brian is a maniac documentary style street photographer. He is obsessed with capturing our disappearing by the second street culture by image and also in words. He is fascinated with people with interesting stories to tell. Stories that predate our current fascination with real estate, demolition and construction. Unfortunately these days this is what is in our faces and can't be ignored. (sigh.) It often boggles the mind that NYC once had a booming creative underground. These are Brian's issues. In addition to being a fab photographer, he gives a great interview.
Check out his blog Who Walk in Brooklyn for today’s interview with Luc Sante!
He also recently interviewed another art show participant, video artiste Donald O'Finn.
And of course he is editor of the fine tome, New York Calling: from Blackout to Bloomberg.
The FIB art show is up for another month!
Do stop by Freddy's and take a gander.
The "Found in Brooklyn Group Art Show" viewing hours are from 11am to 4am, 7 days a week.

"Public Place" Meeting * Monday @ 6:30.
The Executive Committee of Community Board 6 is pleased to host...
What’s Going on at “Public Place”?
An informational update by representatives for the City on the developer selection process and the next steps for planning the site.
From February through May 2007, Brooklyn Community Board 6 and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) hosted a series of public visioning sessions on how the “Public Place” brownfield site at the southeast corner of Smith and 5th Streets could be redeveloped. In July 2007 the City of New York officially issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) which began the formal search for a developer to work with the City and community on planning and redeveloping the site. Responses were due in October 2007. The City is currently in the process of selecting a finalist from the proposals received. At this meeting we expect to hear a report from HPD on the types of responses they received to the RFP, where the City is in the decision-making process, and what the next steps in the process are.
DATE: Monday, February 25, 2008
TIME: 6:30 pm
PLACE: P.S. 32 Auditorium 317 Hoyt Street (between Union/President Streets)
Bring your neighbors! Bring your friends! Find out what’s going on.

Magnetic Field To Close its Doors
Fleshtones at Magnetic Field, March 2007
Taking a break from my Norma Rae activities to bring you some more dismal Brooklyn news. Sorry.
I am shocked and saddened to relay the word that one the best music venues in the downtown Brooklyn area, hell in NYC, is closing down next month. Magnetic Field was more than a bar it is NYC's Garage Rock headquarters. So many fab bands have played at Magnetic Field! For the past few years Magnetic Field also has put on the amazing Rock & Soul Show at the Atlantic Antic. This past year they got goddess Mary Weiss from the Shangi-Las's to perform and the year before The Fleshtones as headliners. And between the Antics the club has consistently brought in what many like to call REAL ROCK & ROLL!!! A plethera and a who's who of rock & roll past and present have graced their stage, see just PART of the list below. All I can say is, in laymens terms, is, THIS SUCKS!
Here is the official statement:
After five-plus years of rocking Atlantic Avenue and entertaining thousands of customers and welcoming hundreds of great bands, Magnetic Field in Brooklyn will be closing its doors on March 31st. Co-owners Lee Greenfeld and William Crane would like to personally thank all of Magnetic Field’s staff and patrons for their loyalty over the past few years, as well as all the numerous bands who have brought some truly tremendous and memorable performances to our stage, such as The A-Bones, Black Hollies, Black Lips, the Brought Low, Cynics, Dansettes, Detachment Kit, Mitch Easter, The Figgs, The Fleshtones, Gabby Glaser, Insomniacs, Lenny Kaye, Lilys, Klimpter, Lyres, Glen Mercer, Mugs, Nashville Ramblers, Nouvellas,The Plimsouls, Ponys, Reigning Sound, Real Kids, Shaw Nuff, Steve Wynn And The Miracle 3, Voxtrot, Woggles, and so many more!
Lee Greenfeld will continue to book and promote shows -- as well as manage bands -- through his Dead Flowers Productions.
William Crane will work towards expanding his ever-growing gameshow empire via his Dick Swizzle alter-ego.
They have great shows going on there this weekend.
Saturday: The A-Bones & The Brought Low
Doors at 8pm.
Sunday: The debut of the super group THE LOST CRUSADERS
Featuring Michael Chandler (Raunch Hands), Buffi Aguero (Tiger! Tiger!, Subsonics), Laura Cantrell, Keith Streng (Fleshtones), Jon Spencer (Heavy Trash, Blues Explosion), Brian McBride (Electric Shadows), Jerome Jackson (Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ), Matt Verta Ray (Heavy Trash, Speedball Baby), Johnny Vignault (The Vendettas, Jonny Chan & The New Dynasty Six), Mike Edison (Raunch Hands, Edison Rocket Train), and many more!

Toll Brothers Make the Bad Boy List.
This is the type of house the Toll Brothers have made their fortune on all over the country.
In doing some research on the Toll Brothers I came upon some alarming information about them. Last week, the very same Toll Brothers who want to build the large 577 unit condo development along the Gowanus, made the “Climate Watch” Companies list compiled by a group of leading US investors. The businesses selected to be on this list are companies who have failed to improve their focus and attention to business risks and opportunities from climate changes.
Toll Brothers are joined by Exxon/Mobil, Chevron, CVS, Ultra Petroleum, General Motors, Ford, Bed Bath & Beyond and get this one. WHOLE FOODS!
SO. Are we are supposed to TRUST this developer to take the care to build on an environmentally hazardous swamp land that is chock full of pathogens?! Trust Toll Brothers to build a man-made hill with a 220 car parking garage in it to “fix” its sewage filled flood zone status?!
This is such a no brainer, just why are our elected officials allowing this?

Meanwhile back at Freddy's,this one is mine.
Some art to sooth your nerves after those last two posts where I was so enraged I got the name of the Toll Brothers project wrong. It's all the same to me, it's just all bad so it doesn't MATTER what their cutesy little names are. It should be called "the mini Atlantic Yards" as far as I'm concerned.
ANYWAY back to pimping the art show at Freddy's. This was my contribution to the show. I painted on found book covers and then collaged them together. Any of the images look familiar?
I will be continuing to feature the artists that participated in the show and I remind you to stop by Freddy's and see it for yourself. The demolition surrounding dear Freddy's is enough to drive one to drink. Freddy's is in the footprint of the Atlantic Yards and Bruce Ratner is the man they write their rent checks to, sick isn't it?
What is the matter with this world? Oh yeah! Greedy developers and the politicians who love them are selfishly destroying all the things we love about where we live!
Sounds like a comic book doesn't it? But unfortunately it is reality and there doesn’t seem to be a Superman to save us. So we have got to do our best to try and save it ourselves.

This is the open sewer where Toll Brothers want to build their HUGE condo complex.
As I mentioned in the last post I wrote about the how the Gowanus Canal floods over when it rains and also that raw sewage is mixed into that flood water. The technical term for that is C.S.O or Combined Sewage Outflow. Here is a photo of the canal area at high tide. The land in the background with the silo is part of the site where Toll Brothers want to build their huge condominium complex.. They plan on ignoring the flooding by building on a man made hill. Now, can you imagine a hill there with a 12-story luxury condo sitting on top? Is it me or is this a band aid solution completely ignorant of the terrain and the forces of nature? The ground gets soft down there by the banks of the canal, probrably because it's full of toxins and chemicals. This is a photo of Combined Sewage Outflow in action. When it rains raw sewage from the toilets in our homes flow into the canal through tunnels into the canal. I received these photos and commentary from a F.R.O.G.G member (Friends and Residents of the Greater Gowanus), a group that has been a watchdog on Gowanus Environmental Issues.
The following words from F.R.O.G.G will fill you in on the technical details of the issue and how the city is ignoring, oops I mean handling it.
The rehabilitated and improved Flushing Tunnel is expected to flush out this communal toilet with greater force, hopefully moving the crap out at a faster pace, but it will still need to be moved through this community. None of this will be tested until after the work has been completed. The idea of building housing along such a waterway is perverted, perverted!Note the brown current of discharge from the CSO which the city has named OH-005. The city is in denial over the fact that this CSO actually spews anything into the canal. The DEP data shows that OH-005 discharges into the canal but 5 times a year. Those who regularly cross this bridge have observed otherwise--sewage discharges here are more frequent than 5 times a month. Because this CSO serves the Owl's Head treatment plant; the city is clueless as what to do about the sewage overflow along the Owl's Head lines so they are pretending it's not happening.
The Gowanus Canal water quality improvement plans address the CSO flow at the head of the canal. The Gowanus Canal water quality plans are all about raising the dissolved oxygen levels in the water in order to meet the lowest level of water quality standard. While they hope pathogen levels will be at a level that will allow them to up grade the water quality classification to CLASS I, the DEP does not know that pathogen levels will be of a level that would be healthy for those living so close to this water.
There is real question about the control of pathogen levels in this water, even after substantial renovation of the Flushing Tunnel takes place.
In the Gowanus Water body/Watershed Plan (currently under Public Comment Period) section 9.2.4 Future Considerations Synopsis states:
"Although this Water body/Watershed Facility Plan is expected to result in significant improvements to the water quality in Gowanus Canal, it is not expected to completely attain all applicable water quality criteria. .....If either current or potential future “fishable/swimmable” water quality criteria are demonstrated to be unrealistic after a period of monitoring, NYCDEP would request reclassification of Gowanus Canal based on a Use Attainability Analysis (UAA). Until the recommended UAAs and required regulatory processes are completed, the current NYSDEC classification of Gowanus Canal (Class SD) should be temporarily retained. "
And they want people to live on top of this? Shame on our politicians for even considering this rezoning.
To find out even more about what is going on around the Gowanus (including Public Place) read this excellent article by Tom Angotti in the Gotham Gazette.

Some Thoughts on Toll Brothers Condo Complex along the Gowanus.
Hey Ma! Look what they want to build across the street from me!!
Those of you who know me or even just read this blog know how feel about this, but here it is, the Toll Brothers plan for a huge condo complex with 577 housing units, retail space and just because they are nice some "community space". I am sure if they had it their way and weren't constructing in a politically active community, it would probably be gated. Toll Brothers usually build in the suburbs and I heard that's what they do out there. They are chomping at the bit for the zoning to change from light industrial to residential and plan on having it done by 2011. Yippee!!! Hope the pump is installed by then!
NEVERMIND THE FACT THAT:
1. The area is a toxic and aquatic brown field. The Gowanus was dredged by Edwin Litchfield in order to facilitate the Industrial Revolution. Y'know that cool old building on the corner of 3rd St. and 3rd. Avenue? Well, that was his office. The area was filled with highly unhealthy industries such as coal processing plants and fertillier factories which left behind a high count of dangerous substances such as sulfites, pesticides, formaldehyde amongst many, many others.
2. It is in a flood zone. The area has a flooding problem that includes sewage which will most likely INCREASE once the Atlantic Yards are built in addition to all the new buildings on 4th Ave. In order to remedy this. it is said that they are planning on RAISING the ground and building on top of that. This sounds iffy to me as Bond Street will then become a valley between the raised ground on 1rst, 2nd and Carroll Streets and the proposed raised ground along the canal. Just don't seem natural. In fact, the WHOLE project is working against the forces of nature. There really isn't much of a shoreline (in terms of width) to speak of either so I am sure construction will cause more problems. The project is working against the environment, despite what the local kayaking group, the Gowanus Dredgers think. The Dredgers are like the "non profit" Gowanus Community Development Corporation who feel that building along the shores will make the canal cleaner somehow. If you believe that, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you! They will build and then forget about you! The Dredgers had a "fund raiser" over the summer, which was sponsored by the Toll Brothers AND Boymelgreen (another Gowanus developer). Quite despicable!
3.In addition to raising the ground they are going to have an underground parking lot for 260 cars!!! Excuse me but since when did everyone in NYC own a car? Or is that a given when you buy a luxury condo?
So, we are going to have all these cars, all these new residents and no PLANNING about how the neighborhood is going to HANDLE all the influx of people. I suppose more things will have to be built, more schools, more supermarkets and let's do it during a RECESSION!!! Brilliant! Well, if one good thing comes out of it, maybe Carroll Gardens will FINALLY get a Post Office out of the deal. I think that's the only deal we will probably get out of this.
I say clean it up; make it a state park with historical ties to the industrial revolution. Something that you don't have to open up the earth and expose the wildlife and local residents to god knows what. I go to the neighborhood meetings where the Army Corp of Engineers & the E.P.A do their presentations and you know what? They NEVER paint a good picture about what is IN the canal, NEVER! And they would if they could but they just state the facts.
This was announced a couple days ago and has been all over the blogs and the news. It is SO in my face that it is almost difficult for me to talk about. I knew it was coming for years but never REALLY believed it. Will it happen? I think so. Our Mayor cares about nothing but the all mighty dollar. Environmental concerns are a joke when there is valuable land to be built upon.

Lottery Bird
Alex Lockwood is one of the artists participating in the "Found in Brooklyn Group Art Show" currently hanging up at Freddy's Backroom. He submitted a few attention grabbing pieces made out of found scratch-off lottery tickets that I have gotten many questions about. I did a little Q & A with Alex to shed some light on his scratch-off obsession!
What propelled you to start picking up lottery tickets? Did you become obsessed with it or is it more of a leisurely activity?
For the past few years I've been picking a lot of material up off of the street. I was in Williamsburg when I started to do it. Then I moved to Clinton Hill and I noticed lottery tickets all over the place, especially around the bodegas on Fulton and Clinton and Waverly between Greene and Lafayette. I started by incorporating them into collages, but I wasn't that happy with the results. Then I started to cut them up and use the pieces in my illustrations. The bird in the show is one of the first of those. After a while I had quite a stash - one of the pieces in plexi uses 300 tickets, the other about 375.
At some point I began to get into tramp and prison art. I especially like prison art - cigarette pack bags, matchstick crosses, toothpick models of ships -because of the limitation of available material and the detail and focus on one task. I can work obsessively on one project for many hours. Its is not a purely pleasant or relaxing experience. Sometimes there's a nice flow, sometimes my brain gets ugly. But regardless of that it is satisfying.
How long did it take you to do those 2 pieces in the plexi boxes? Its hard to say how long it took to make those. The collecting takes a few seconds a day over many months. I walk a lot so when I pass a bodega I pay attention to the street. When I'm in a liquor store with scratch-offs I usually find a pile in the trash can. The time to fold was different for the two pieces. When I started the smaller one (on the left at the show) I knew the technique well, the number of ticketsI needed, the arrangement I wanted. So it was one long day, morning to night, to cut (6x4 tickets need to be cut, 4x4 tickets don't), fold each and fold them into the others. The piece on the right came together slowly because I was figuring everything out as I went along.
How long have you been doing art? Did you go to art school?
I didn't go to art school. I've been taking pictures for years but have never been that satisfied with my work. I began working in collage maybe 5 years ago. The two pieces in plexi are my first sculptures.
Do you play lottery yourself?
If someone buys me a ticket.
Well, I suppose finding all those losing tickets is enough to make anyone doubt the odds!
The show will be hanging up at Freddy's for another couple of weeks. Do stop in between the hours of 11 am to 4 am, 7 days a week to see the whole thing. Take a look at Alex Lockwood's website to see more of his fine work.

Photographers' Rights Mobilization * Sunday
Bond St & Third St.
Photography is not a crime, O.K? But you wouldn't know it as the police have been treating it as it is lately, they've stopped someone else recently photographing around the Atlantic Yards. If you want to learn more about how to handle yourself and what your rights are should you be stopped by the police, go to this gathering on Sunday afternoon at 3pm near the Atlantic Yards.
WHAT:
A "photographers' rights free expression mobilization" responding to the harassment of video artist/teacher Katherin McInnis by an MTA police officer last Sunday, February 3rd on public property within the Atlantic Yards footprint. We will discuss photographers' rights and the Atlantic Yards situation, then walk and photograph within the footprint. Depending on circumstances, we may have the opportunity to engage in a respectful information exchange with MTA police and/or
private security personnel. End point: Freddy's Bar and Backroom, 485 Dean Street, corner of Sixth Avenue.
WHERE:
Meet at the Brooklyn Bears Community Garden, Pacific Street and Flatbush Avenue, entrance on Pacific. If there's *heavy* rain or snow, we'll change the meeting place to Freddy's Bar, 485 Dean, corner of
Sixth Avenue.
WHEN: Sunday, February 10th @ 3pm
And speaking of the Atlantic Yards and how it will effect the community, check out this video filmed at Freddy's Bar and the neighborhood that surrounds it.

Nancy Drew
Fresh Meat
Nancy Drew is one of the artists that has participated in the "Found in Brooklyn" Group Show at Freddy's Backroom.
Nancy Drew's medium is GLITTER and FLOCKING. What is flocking, you may ask? Flocking is soft and fuzzy, sort of like velvet but more like the stuff that carnival prizes are made of. This piece is part of her “Porn” series, entitled “Fresh Meat”. From a few feet away it looks like a colorful, sparkly abstract but up close it is much more complex. Composed of the women and words from VHS porn boxes and rendered in candy colors, Nancy Drew makes the women on the boxes look as comical as the copy in a brilliant way.
Click on this link here to see much more of this series.
Nancy Drew’s glitter fabulous paintings have been in many group shows throughout NYC and she is represented by Roebling Hall Gallery in NYC where she will be having her third solo show this year.
I’ll let you know when!
In the meantime, check out Nancy's work and others (many who I will be featuring, so stay tuned) this month at Freddy's Backroom from 11am to 4am, 7 days a week!

"Hello"
First off, this my block. My beautiful desolate block. I like to call it Tobacco Road, it's off the beaten path yet minutes from civilization. I decided to start this Blog today, this FREEZING cold February day and because of that I will begin posting photos of stuff I've found starting 2 weeks ago. I usually find stuff on the weekends as that is when people usually clean and clear stuff out. Eventually I hope that this will become more of a real time journal with me posting within a day or so of finding my treasure (or trash!)
Hey it's Found in Brooklyn's OFFICIAL first birthday today. This is a repeat of my first post ever. I totally sound like I am talking to the void. Somehow people found me and as I mentioned in the post below the direction of the blog COMPLETELY changed. The original background color of F.I.B used to be a screaming purple by the way! Also, after fifteen years here I still never get tired of taking pictures of my light blue block!
Thanks for reading!

Thanks For Coming Out Last Night!
"Instructions" by Triada Samaras
Well I do believe last night's art & music extravaganza was a success! The art seemed to be well received and the bands were all fantastic, as I knew they would be. Apparently it was the busiest night Freddy's has had in a while, the backroom and the bar were packed! The mix of artists, musicians, bloggers and their entourages made for an excellent mix, which was my goal, I was trying to relive the Danceteria (yes I know I'm showing my age & I don't care!) days of the 80's when you would see some arty thing and then see 4 bands that had nothing to do with each other but were all strong. The only thing missing was a DJ playing "Planet Rock"! I had a lot of fun putting this together and honestly was quite shocked when people wanted to participate. As I have learned a lot about myself doing this blog this year I also learned while planning and promoting this thing that I LOVE putting together events. My only regret is that I wish I could pay the musicians what they well deserve for making the evening so special as they ALL were the hardest working bands in showbiz last night.
While on the subject of doing the blog one of the hands down best things about it is that it has helped connect me to a community that I have been living in for so long. I love how the blog lets me brag about passionate and talented people or get pisssed off at the many morons who think they are in charge ha ha, that's why I love Triada's piece so much!!! The party last night was originally just going to be a little art show but then I was told by the management that I also had to book the bands. Then I said, "What the hell, let's go all out!" The blog started in similar fashion with no expectations or knowledge of even WHAT a blog was, I think I knew of only two at that point! And it was supposed to be only photos of stuff I find on the street, a concept which really didn't last that long as it was sort of limiting, and god knows I hate to be limited!
By the way the show is up for a month and if you missed last night, I encourage you to stop by and check it out anytime between the hours 11 AM to 4 AM, 7 days a week! I also will most definitely be featuring some of the work on here this week.

Donald sites "TV Guide" as one of main influences, you have got to read it!! Also I was quite chuffed to be called "the Don Kirshner of Bond Street" as Rock Concert certainly was one of the main influences in my life!

Hurt Dog found on 6th Ave with leash and collar on. Any info greatly appreciated!
I received this email today, read on...
"My husband & I found a cute brownish/reddish dog on Sixth Ave & 2nd or 3rd Street around 11pm last night. He's about 25lbs, and looks to maybe be a shiba inu mixed with something else (pitt?). He was hurt - had been hit by a car - and we took him to the vet. He's still there. He had a leash and collar, but no tags or microchip. Is he yours? Do you know who he belongs to? I'm anxious to get in touch with his owner."
This dog has a green and white checked collar, if you know ANYTHING or even if you think this dog LOOKS familiar, please contact Nicky at this email address: nicky(dot)agate(at)nyu(dot)edu
