True Style

I don't know about you but when I see people walking around in this heat (over 90 degrees with a humidity factor that can kill!) with TIGHT skinny jeans and TIGHT T- shirts (really not an attractive look,no matter how skinny you are) I start feeling their discomfort. But then I have to remind myself that when I was a young girl, I used to stomp around NYC in black tights and combat boots in a 100 degree weather (and don't forget the heavy eye makeup!). Anyway digressing as usual, I was struck by this lady's style last week on 8th Avenue in Manhattan.

This photo was taken with a real film camera and developed in a darkroom by moi!

Hi Lisanne,
Cool shot! It looks like it was taken in the 1950's.
This lady definitely has style!

Nice shot, has a real 1950s feel about it. As someone who has 'rediscovered' real film it's nice to seeing others using it as well. I'm from the UK so I would be pushed to find Brooklyn on the map.

stumbled upon your blog because you're a (veryworthy) blog of note. i love your concept.

this is totally something i think about on a daily basis here in virginia! i nearly die from the humidity, and my clothes are nearly always damp after setting foot outside so if i'm going to be outside i don't want to be peeling my skinny jeans off me later. gross.

this woman seems to have gotten it right.

She's like a samurai warrior. That is totally awesome.

I agree w/ the first comment. I actually thought this shot was taken back in the 50s. It has a classic feel about it. It's hard to be stylin in the mad heat, but this lady gets props for keepin it chill... if lil archaic.

One.

I have a hard time with those 'skinny' jeans as well. I think because their name got my hopes up. Then I saw that skinny jeans make skinny people look fat! It was like a dream come true.

I love this photo, and her hat, which looks just like the bowl that holds decorative fruit on my mother's coffee table.

I've been looking for one of those!

I feel sorrier for the guys in full suit, shirt and all the way done up ties in this heat than anyone else! Poor babies!

Love this photo!
Reminds me of a Roy DeCarava photograph from the 1950s.

Cool pic. Lovin' the style. Not too convinced about the hat though, it does distinctly remind me of a fruit bowl.

To the people who don't understand my beef, when it's hot and you are waiting for a train in an unairconditioned subway station underground that feels like Calcutta, to have to look at some chick in jeans that are cutting off circulation in her thighs and and a tshirt with spandex (in which you can usually see every detail of her ill fitting bra) in it is painful...also many of the people wearing this are not skinny which makes it even more painful...thanks to all that dig this lady, if your'e good I'll put the photo up of her shoes!!!

I luvs peg leg jeans but I dig hats too. Thing about NY is anything goes. And hey, the wait for the train is breif but the hours in the chill AC are long. Take comfort. Alla you fashion slaves.

I think I spies me a google ad right up there, Pants On Fire. See you again - Never!
Keep it up with the darkroom carcinogens, I mean chemicals.
And ya, thanks for the tolerance of people wearing whatever they want, oh arbiter of taste NOT FOR ME, you're not!

Reicha said...

oh no, I never wear my jeans/shirts that tight. Thats too tight. My motto is "if it aint tight, it aint right". But being able to see the design on my bra is taking it a little too far. Anywho, please post the shoes, post the shoes, post the shoes!

;-)

Wow. anonymous is sooooo self righteous! So angry. I've got one word for you, anonymous: therapy.

I've always admired the feeling of skinny jeans disallowing sweat to exist below the belt. :-)

Not.

I agree with you about the skinny jeans, though I remember wearing them, too. I am amazed at the retro styles you are finding on NYC streets in 2008. Interesting!

It's a Chinese farmers hat!! hoo ha!
Here is Australia you would be crazy not to wear a hat (sun protection).
I always wear one when I am outside for extended periods of time, but then I don't want my face to go all leathery either :(

MsLeti said...

Amen to the skinny jeans and t's in the heat. I am always taken when I see that here, in Texas. Why, just why? We shall never know.

I love that pic. You got a good one there. As for the hat...interesting style. I do agree with some other comments in that I thought it was taken in a much earlier period.
